UNI Softball Hammers Cyclones

Cedar Falls, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team picked up a 9-0 win over the Iowa State University Cyclones this afternoon at Robinson-Dresser Field.
Timely hitting paired with a remarkable pitching performance from Jamie Fisher led UNI (18-9 overall, 5-3 MVC) to the 9-run shutout over the intra-state rivaling Cyclones (17-15, 0-3 Big 12). Rikki Alcaraz was the first to score for the Panthers after connecting for a solo-shot to left-center in the 2nd inning to give UNI a 1-0 lead. Samantha Olson kept things going in the 2nd inning with a single to left field. Olson picked up her team-leading 10th stolen base. Caitlin Wnek tallied her 2nd homer on the season later in the inning lifting the Panthers to a 3-0 advantage.
The offensive attack continued throughout the game for the Panthers. Olson plated an addition run in the 5th inning before the bats erupted in the 6th. UNI tallied five runs on five hits which featured Julia Hunter's 5th homer on the season and a double from Gina Brown who extended her on-base streak to 15 games. The Panthers were led at the plate by Samantha Olson who went 3-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and scored a trio of runs.
Jamie Fisher picked up her 11th win on the season after tossing a 2-hit shutout after 6 innings of work. Fisher (11-6) faced 20 batters where she surrendered 0 walks and fanned 5 opponents.
The Panthers will take the field again this weekend in a three-game series with the Indiana State University Sycamores. UNI will play a pair of games on Saturday and a single game on Sunday to wrap up the series.
